God designed the world to operate in sync with human behavior. Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin explains this beautifully in his classic work Nefesh HaChaim, based on the verse from Psalms: “Hashem is your shadow at your right hand” (Psalms 121:5). Just like a shadow moves exactly according to the object that casts it, so too, God “mirrors” human actions — shaping the upper worlds in direct response to the movements and thoughts of a person below.

Rabbi Chaim writes: “Just as the shadow of something moves only in the direction of that thing’s movement, so too, precisely in that way, does God conduct Himself with us, so to speak. The Creator aligns all the spiritual realms in response to the direction and inclination of a person’s thoughts. That’s the meaning of the verse: ‘God is your shadow’ — if you laugh, He laughs with you; if you cry, He cries with you. If you show a sour face or a kind one, He reflects that same energy right back to you. God behaves with you exactly as your own energy behaves toward Him.”

In this teaching, the very name of God — Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh (“I will be what I will be”), contains a profound message. As the Midrash and Zohar say, God told Moses: “Tell the Israelites: My name is ‘I will be what I will be’ — meaning, as you are with Me, so I am with you.”

This insight leads Rabbi Chaim to a striking spiritual principle: the joy or heaviness we feel isn't only internal, but it directly influences what flows toward us from Above. “Come and see,” he writes, “the lower world is always in a receiving state. The upper world does not influence the lower except in response to its state. If you shine light and positivity from below, that same brightness is sent back to you from above. But if you stand below in sadness, you receive sadness in return (judgment energy). Human joy draws down more joy from on high.”

Joy creates joy. The emotional atmosphere we choose to dwell in sets off a chain reaction, bringing back matching energies from the universe.

How do we cultivate this kind of positive mindset?

1. Eliminate Negative Thinking

As discussed earlier, negative thoughts are the default for many people — they arise naturally, often rooted in past fears, pain, or survival instincts. The first step is to become aware of these patterns and actively work to remove them. Review techniques (like journaling or mindfulness) and choose those that fit your personality and emotional makeup.

2. Train Your Brain with Positive Language

Negative self-talk increases stress and cortisol, physically affecting your body. Even extreme or harsh inner language can shut down creative thinking. Instead, train your mind to use empowering phrases, such as: “This is a challenge, but God gave me the tools to handle it. With effort and faith, I will overcome.”

Replacing reactivity with encouragement retrains your brain’s default response.

3. Swap Out Harsh Words for Uplifting Ones

Linguists and psychologists have proven that language shapes behavior. Harsh or negative words broadcast emotional stress and reinforce limiting beliefs. In contrast, softer, more positive language helps reshape your mindset and energy.

Try this simple exercise:

  • Pay attention to negative words you use during the day.

  • Write them down.

  • Next to each word, list a gentler or more hopeful alternative.

  • Practice using these upgraded words in your speech and thoughts.

4. Describe Emotions in a Positive Frame

The way we describe our feelings affects how we internalize them. When we label experiences with emotionally charged or overly negative language, they become fixed in our subconscious in that form. If instead we reframe the emotion in constructive terms, the memory is stored more positively. For example, say: “I felt challenged, but I was resilient,” instead of “It was awful and overwhelming.”

5. See Struggles as Challenges, Not Doom

Positive thinking doesn’t mean ignoring problems, but reframing them. See obstacles as opportunities to grow and believe that you have the tools to overcome them, because you do. Look at people who’ve triumphed through difficulty; they’ve discovered inner strength and a deeper sense of fulfillment.

Remember the phrase from Psalms: “Those who sow in tears will reap in joy.” Setbacks are part of the path to success. Thomas Edison failed nearly 3,000 times before inventing the lightbulb. When asked how he kept going, he said he simply learned 3,000 ways not to make a lightbulb.

6. Visualize the Solution

Instead of looping through negative “what-ifs,” imagine the solution. Picture the problem being resolved — visualize the details, the feelings, the relief. This simple shift moves you from anxiety to possibility.

7. Write a Scenario of Success

Take a moment to write out your challenge, but with a twist: describe how you successfully overcome it. What actions do you take? How do you feel? What strengths do you discover? The act of writing makes the vision more real and accessible.

8. Repeat Empowering Affirmations

To rewire your subconscious, positive beliefs need to be repeated until they become part of your emotional and mental framework. Choose phrases that uplift and empower you, and say them daily. These can include:

  • “I have the strength to face this.”

  • “This moment is preparing me for something greater.”

  • “I trust in the process and in the good that will come.”

The more you internalize these thoughts, the more they shape your inner world, and in turn, your outer reality.

Just as your shadow moves when you move, so too does divine energy respond to your emotional posture. Positive thought isn’t naive, but deeply spiritual. It creates joy, draws kindness, and opens the flow of abundance from the Source. When we show up with light, the universe reflects that light back.

Start small: shift one word, reframe one thought, believe in one new possibility, and watch the ripple effect change your life.
