A man came to Rabbi Mordechai of Nesvizh, of blessed memory, who was known for his blessings that came true, fulfilling the dictum "A righteous man decrees and Hashem fulfills," and asked for healing because he was very sick. The Rabbi told him: It is not certain you will recover. The man asked: Why? The Rabbi said: I will tell you a story.
A couple came to Rabbi of Koznitz, of blessed memory, and said they had lost a bag of money, asking the Rabbi to decree that it be found. The Rabbi refused. The man said: I will give the Rabbi a gold coin if he will decree it. The Rabbi said: I will not decree it unless you give a hundred gold coins.
The husband and wife looked at each other, then the wife said: Forget it, why do we need to pay so much? Let's trust in Hashem and He will help without a hundred gold coins...
The Rabbi said: Now I can bless you to find the bag because now you have returned to believing in Hashem.
Rabbi of Nesvizh continued to the sick man: You came to me because you heard of a Rabbi who decrees healings and salvations – and you forgot Hashem! Only if you trust in Hashem, who is the source of salvation, can I bless you.
Trust helps a person cope in any situation and brings them out of difficulties. Trust frees from negative emotions and brings upon a person divine guidance and salvation.
I once heard the story of a diver who returned to faith, who is now a Rabbi of a well-known community. He told how during a dive he encountered a problem, a malfunction, that if not fixed within minutes, could result in death or paralysis. He was still secular but realized he had no choice but to cry out to his Father in Heaven. At that moment, he felt within him a strong and deep faith that Hashem would help him. And behold, miraculously, he managed to rise above the water. To this day, no one understands how he survived. Following this event, he fully returned to his faith. Later in life, one of his sons fell ill, and his condition was dire. That same point of deep faith awoke in him as before, and he made an effort to strengthen his faith in the Creator's salvation, to pray and strengthen himself, and indeed faith won over nature, and his son recovered.
