The Enemy Within: Understanding the Evil Inclination in Jewish Thought
A psychological and spiritual look at the voice of self-sabotage, temptation, and doubt that never leaves your side

We all carry with us a lifelong companion, who knows us better than we know ourselves. This voice is invisible, but its presence is constant, whispering suggestions, offering shortcuts, and pulling us in directions we often regret. In Jewish tradition, this voice is called the Yetzer Hara — the “Evil Inclination.” Here, it speaks for itself.
“Nice to Meet You — Though You Know Me Well”
Hello there! My name is surely familiar. In fact, I’ve been your closest partner since the very day you were born. I’ve never left your side, not once. You’ve never seen my face, yet I am with you everywhere.
But let me be honest: I am your greatest enemy. Strange, isn’t it? Have I ever truly worked for your good? Think hard. And yet, you constantly forgive me. Sometimes multiple times a day. Your willingness to make peace with me leaves me baffled.
You know that I want only your downfall, and still, you follow my advice. You think you know my tricks, but I always find a new way to surprise you.
A Relationship That Never Ends
We first met at your birth. The moment you drew breath, I appeared, and I’ll be with you until your very last breath. Even then, I’ll try to influence you. Ironically, whenever you remind yourself of that final day, it ruins my work. (Oops, I just gave you a tip.)
But I’m not all-powerful. I started losing some control when you turned thirteen. That’s when my rival, the Yetzer Tov, the Good Inclination appeared. When I complained about him, heaven told me it was for the sake of balance, so that you could truly choose.
Still, the truth is, you prefer me. My payment is instant and I offer pleasures in the here and now. My rival pays on credit in rewards that come only much later.
When I Feel Weak
I’ll confess something. There are times I feel suffocated. That happens when you’re inside a study hall, immersed in learning and spiritual growth. In that space, I lose my grip, my stone heart softens, and my iron grip shatters. I’m forced to retreat and look for other “clients.”
That’s why I work hard to keep you busy, distracted, too tired or too preoccupied to enter that place in the first place. If I can keep you away, I win.
Over the years, I’ve mapped you inside and out. I know your weak spots better than you do. I know when to push, when to hold back, when to tempt and when to wait. I never rush. I take you step by step until you’re entangled in my net.
Not Always the Devil You Expect
I don't always arrive in the form of a cartoon devil with horns and a pitchfork. That’s not my style. My real talent is disguise. Sometimes I look like a tempter, sometimes like a moral voice, and sometimes even like a friend offering help.
Though the sages called me “the old one”, I can easily appear young, trendy, and modern. In fact, in today’s world, I often take the form of technology — tiny, sleek devices that slip right into your pocket. Through them, I gain easy access to your heart and mind.
My Real Endgame
Here’s the part you don’t expect: my job doesn’t end when you make a mistake. That’s just the beginning. My real work is complete only when I rise up and accuse you for the very failure I pushed you into. Fair of me, isn’t it?
Signed,
Your Inner Enemy

Dwelling between the two doors of your heart.
