Columbia University, one of the most prestigious institutions in the USA, is facing severe criticism following its decision to allow Joseph Massad, a lecturer who praised Hamas actions, to teach a course on Zionism, but from his own perspective. The decision met with widespread opposition from politicians, Jewish organizations, and academics, who claimed it was an affront to ethics and the historical memory of the Jewish people.

Massad, a lecturer of Jordanian descent, published an article after the massacre praising the organization's actions, describing them as "amazing." In a column on the "Electronic Intifada" website, he wrote: "The sight of Palestinian resistance fighters breaking through the barriers and fences of the Israeli prison was amazing." These words, unequivocal in nature, sparked significant outrage, yet the university chose to give him a platform to teach on such a sensitive subject.

Opponents of the decision argue that Columbia University is undermining not only basic moral values but is also working to perpetuate anti-Jewish and anti-Israeli narratives. "Is this the academia that decades ago was a symbol of excellence and objectivity?" asks Prof. Lawrence Rosenblatt, an international relations lecturer who resigned in protest. "This move proves that Columbia University has lost its moral compass. How is someone who openly supported acts of terror against Jews fit to teach about Zionism?"

The decision has also faced harsh criticism from Jewish and pro-Israel organizations. The group StopAntisemitism reacted angrily: "Appointing a supporter of terrorism to teach about Zionism is a slap in the face to all who have suffered from violence and antisemitism. What's the next step? Nazis teaching a class on equal rights?"

Democratic Congressman Ritchie Torres, a well-known supporter of Israel, condemned the move. "This university has crossed every moral boundary," he wrote. "It is unacceptable for American taxpayers to subsidize an institution that legitimizes terror and hatred towards Israel and the Jewish people."

Jewish community leaders in the U.S. warn that such decisions could encourage antisemitism and undermine efforts to promote understanding and objectivity regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. "We must fight for truth and defend Israel's right to exist," stated StandWithUs.
