"We Are Twins, But Never Dreamed We'd Have Triplets"

When Avior and Melissa Makhlouf learned they were expecting triplets, they were in complete shock. Now, as they prepare for their triplets' release from the neonatal unit, they share their challenging pregnancy journey, the support they've received throughout, and above all - their profound faith in Hashem.

It was the first wedding anniversary of Avior and Melissa Makhlouf from Netanya. The young couple just wanted to travel to Jerusalem to celebrate the significant date, but Melissa began experiencing nausea and headaches.

"I knew I was pregnant, in the eighth week," she recounts, "but at that stage, I hadn't undergone any examinations and generally felt great. Despite this, I thought perhaps it was pregnancy-related, and we decided to go to the emergency room to be safe." At that moment, they couldn't have imagined the news awaiting them.

As residents of Netanya, Avior and Melissa went to Laniado Hospital, where Melissa was checked and told everything was fine and unrelated to the pregnancy. But since they were already there, they decided to do an ultrasound. "I was brought into the room where there was a doctor and a resident," she recalls. "The doctor started the exam, and quickly stepped out to tell Avior: 'It's important for you to be here'."

From this point, Avior shares the unbelievable story: "When I entered the room, the doctor showed us the screen and explained: 'Here you can see the first sac, and here the second...' We understood it was likely twins, which surprised us. Although I am a twin and Melissa is twins, we never dreamed there was more than one baby. The shock grew even bigger when the doctor suddenly turned to the resident and said, 'Look, we can see a third sac'."

How did you feel about the news of having triplets?

"Initially shocked and then very stressed," admits Melissa. "I remember calling my mother from the emergency room and whispering: 'Mom, there are three pregnancy sacs...' and my sweet mother reassured me: 'It will be alright, don't worry.'"

But it's hard not to worry, especially when reading about the subject and understanding that a triplet pregnancy is very high risk. In a conversation with Dr. Nir Ram Duvdevani, head of the ultrasound unit in the women's and maternity department at Laniado, he explains the extent of the concern: "In a triplet pregnancy, there's a risk of premature birth and complications, so as doctors, we are instructed to inform couples that if they go to the committee for an abortion, they will get approval for reduction. Of course, as doctors, and especially in a hospital that values life, we don't impose our opinion on anyone. Still, as required of us, we provide all the medical information and clarify that if they want to continue the pregnancy, we will be with them and accompany them faithfully along the way."

According to him, the Makhlouf couple case, where a triplet pregnancy happens naturally, without treatments, is about 1 in 8,000 in frequency. "But its rarity increases dramatically because not all pregnancies that begin as triplets result in the birth of three healthy babies, sometimes because parents decide to give up, and sometimes because the pregnancy doesn't develop as needed."

But Avior and Melissa emphasize they never considered reduction for a moment. "It was clear to me we would embark on this journey, even if it would be hard," Melissa clarifies. According to her, there were also challenging times when there were concerns about the babies' well-being, and not a few worries that the pregnancy might stop, or Heaven forbid, one of the embryos would be harmed. "Every time I felt weak, we turned to speak with Rabbi Yosef Gabay. He was like an angel and told me the right words: 'Hashem gives such a mission only to those who can handle it, and if he entrusted you with three pure souls, you are certainly the most suitable person to raise and care for them.' Every time I left him strengthened, with great strength.
