Two special guests visited the Chabad House in Athens, Greece, last Shabbat: Sarah Netanyahu, the wife of the Prime Minister, and her son Avner, who surprised attendees with uplifting and inspiring Torah commentary during the first meal.
As is known, Avner is a reserved figure and does not typically give interviews to the media. However, he has appeared publicly with a kippah on his head and has drawn closer to Judaism thanks to his grandfather Rabbi Shmuel Ben Artzi. A childhood friend once claimed that Avner learned much about Judaism from his grandfather, strengthened religiously, and even began observing Shabbat and praying at the Great Synagogue in Jerusalem.
His mother, Sarah, also lights Shabbat candles, and his father, the Prime Minister, performs Kiddush and then sits with his son Avner to study the weekly Torah portion together.
During his Torah speech in Athens, Avner spoke about the strength of Israel as a people and its ability to survive all challenges throughout history, thanks to the preservation of tradition and connection to Jewish identity.
The Chabad House in Athens is managed by Rabbi Mendel Hendel and his wife Nechama, who hosted no less than one hundred people last Shabbat.
