Ken Burgess and Tor Marci Present: A New Take on Psalm 119

Psalm 119 is the longest psalm in the Book of Tehillim—and the longest chapter in the Bible. The collaboration between Tor Marci and Ken Burgess transformed it into a unique album they're hoping will draw people closer to this special psalm.

<\/iframe><\/p><p dir="LTR">Psalm 119 in Tehillim isn't among those frequently recited. Filled with beautiful verses that have often been turned into familiar songs ('Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path', 'Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things out of Your law', 'Remember the word to Your servant, upon which You have caused me to hope. This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your word has given me life' are just three examples), the chapter itself is a challenging prayer to remember easily. It is the longest psalm in Tehillim—and the longest chapter in the entire Bible. It contains 176 verses—eight verses for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet.<\/p><p dir="LTR">This is the exact chapter that composer Tom Marci chose for his current musical project, a new album released in recent weeks under the name 'Tehillim Project - 119'. Even before we heard a single song from the album, it was clear this would be anything but ordinary—and it indeed was not.<\/p><p dir="LTR"><strong>Tor, what made you want to specifically compose music for this enormous psalm?</strong><\/p><p dir="LTR">"In the second album I released in my musical career, I composed a song on just one letter from Psalm 119—the letter 'Ayin'. Since then, the thought lingered in my mind that if I could compose music for one letter from this psalm, let’s see if I can do it for the whole thing..."</p><p dir="LTR">The work was not simple. "For some of the letters, I matched instrumental pieces I had composed in the past, but for the vast majority of the letters, I had to compose a brand new melody. Reish was the hardest letter: the segment begins with a very sad tone: 'See my affliction, rescue me, for I have not forgotten Your law, plead my cause and redeem me'...I had to rack my brain to find a way to compose it without making the music somber and dull."</p><div class="banner_in_article" style="float: right; margin-left: 15px;"><div id="bnr_id_69083284b7d2c" data-type="desktop_in_article" data-tag="" class="trg_banner bannerCls show_in_desktop" style="position:relative; z-index:1; width:300px; height:250px; "></div></div><p dir="LTR">After a year and a half of work, Tor approached <a href="https://www.hidabroot.org\/he\/video\/57240">Ken Burgess,</a> the producer and arranger with whom he had already released two albums in the past. Burgess's enthusiasm was immediate. "I thought it was a great idea. It was something different, and we succeeded in making a very special album from it," he says.<\/p><p dir="LTR"><div class="pic_alt_wrap"><img alt="Amiran and Ken (Photo: Shani Dvir)" data-src="https://storage.hidabroot.org\/OLD_MEDIA\/ScreenHunter_02%20Mar.%2030%2010.05.jpg" class="lazy"><span>Amiran and Ken (Photo: Shani Dvir)</span></div><\/p><p dir="LTR">Ken and his wife Nava chose the singers ("They're all good friends of mine, who have worked with me before," says Ken) – eight singers who would divide between them the singing of the 24 sections. "It seemed excessive to expect one singer to recite all of it," explains Tor Marci. "I also feared it would make the disc sound monotonous. In this way, we received a variety of voices and styles, which added so much to the music." The singers who participated in the project are Or Kolenberg, Michael Kontzman, Shmuel Nedel, Amiran Dvir, Shmuel Yona, Shmulik Yeshuron, Arik Dvir, and Shmuel Bar Avin.<\/p><p dir="LTR">Ken Burgess and Tor Marci grew up in two geographically distant places but embarked on journeys that brought them to very close points. Burgess, formerly a London composer who worked with music greats like John Lennon, came to Israel following his Israeli wife, Nava. Here, he discovered that the conversion he underwent abroad before marrying his wife was not according to Jewish law, and he decided to undergo a halachic conversion and accept the yoke of Torah and mitzvot. He also vowed never to leave the land of Israel, a vow echoed in his famous song 'Yitro' from the first album he released in the country. While Burgess turned to Judaism through his wife, Marci came closer to Judaism because of his children. "I wanted my children to receive an education with roots and values. I did not want them to grow up in an atmosphere of Western emptiness and hedonism," he said in the past.<\/p><p dir="LTR">When he began to draw closer to Judaism twenty years ago, Marci felt an immediate attraction to the psalms composed by King David. Over the years, he privately composed music for psalms until one of his rabbis discovered this hidden work—and sent him to Ken Burgess. After the first album proved to Marci and Burgess that there indeed is demand for songs based on the psalms, their second album was released. Now, as mentioned, they are celebrating the release of the third album—still Tehillim, but in a different and challenging concept.<\/p><p dir="LTR">"Psalm 119 is one of the most powerful chapters in Tehillim. The Jewish people in it ask Hashem for help through the merit of the Torah we study, and each segment deals with this. Because of its length, people often skip it, and it's a shame. King David speaks to each and every one of us, and when you say the chapter—you feel it," says Marci, who claims he does not see himself as having taken a risk with the 'Project 119'. "King David took that risk long before," he laughs. With the help of music, he hopes people will remember the words of this chapter more easily. "In the past, the Levites played these songs in the Temple. In our days, these tunes have been lost, leaving us only the words, to which we tried to add contemporary music."</p><p dir="LTR"><div class="pic_alt_wrap"><img alt="Tor Marci" data-src="https://storage.hidabroot.org\/OLD_MEDIA\/ScreenHunter_03%20Mar.%2030%2010.05.jpg" class="lazy"><span>Tor Marci</span></div><\/p><p dir="LTR"><strong>Is there a song on the album that you particularly love?</strong><\/p><p dir="LTR">"I really love the songs for 'Heh' and 'Tav'...I also really love 'Lamed' and 'Yud'. Actually, if you ask me tomorrow, I might give a different answer. It's really like asking me which of my children I love the most."</p><p dir="LTR">If the unique nature and content of the album aren’t enough, here's something not commonly seen in many albums: all proceeds from sales are destined for charity. "Many people donated their time to this project, and I'm not looking to profit from it," says Marci.<\/p><p dir="LTR"><strong>Is there another album in the works with Ken Burgess?</strong><\/p><p dir="LTR">"Yes, and this time it's not songs from the Book of Tehillim. Ken is a giant songwriter in English, and I'm definitely not. But by being with him, I guess I'm catching some of his inspiration...We're working together on a new album of songs in English, hoping it'll be released by the end of the year."</p></div><div
