The amount of eating required to be obligated in the final blessing (from "Halacha Yomit" based on the rulings of the late Rabbi Ovadia Yosef):
For anything a person eats, they must recite a "first blessing" like "Shehakol" or "HaEtz". Even if they eat only a small amount of the food, they must bless it, as long as they intend to eat it. However, if one merely tastes it to adjust seasoning or the like, there is no blessing. Therefore, a person chewing flavored gum, even if they swallow only a very small amount, must bless the taste derived from the gum. Similarly, when drinking, a blessing is required even for just a single drop.
However, this only applies to the first blessing. For the final blessing, it is only required when "significant eating" occurs. "Significant eating" is defined as the volume of an "olive" (27 grams) for food, and "Revi'it" (81 grams) for a drink.
Moreover, the eating or drinking must occur within a specific timeframe to combine. If someone eats an "olive" amount of bread throughout the entire day, bit by bit, they cannot recite the Blessing After Meals. The eating must occur within the timeframe of "K'dei Achilat Pras", with debate over whether this is five or seven and a half minutes. Therefore, it is advisable to consume an "olive" portion within four and a half minutes to meet all opinions, especially during Shabbat meals.
Regarding the final blessing over a beverage, one must drink a "Revi'it" amount (81 grams) at once. If they pause between sips, no blessing is recited. Therefore, someone sipping soup with a spoon or drinking hot coffee or tea does not recite a final blessing, as they cannot drink it all at once.
