One of the foundations of Jewish mitzvot is the mitzvah of 'Family Purity'. Afterfive days from the start of menstruation and once the woman has confirmed through self-examination that the menstrual blood has completely ceased, she counts seven clean days at the end of which she immerses in a mikveh (a pool of clear water constructed according to special laws that grant it the status of a mikveh taharah). From the onset of menstruation until after immersion in the mikveh, the couple is prohibited from any physical contact.

When the woman is in a state of niddah, the Torah forbids physical contact between the couple. Due to the severity of the niddah prohibition, the sages also forbade certain forms of affection as they lead to thoughts, habitual transgression, and the potential for touch.
