Grateful Even Through Loss: A Mother's Journey of Faith

After heartbreak, Avital Or found healing and strength through one simple word—“thank you.”

#VALUE!

Some days stay with you forever.

I still remember the doctor’s face that morning. His words were cold and matter-of-fact, like he’d said them a hundred times before.
“You’re going into surgery. The embryo is no longer alive. We’ll just remove it.”

Just like that. No feeling. No pause.

My heart broke into a thousand pieces.

This wasn’t just a “procedure” to me. This was my baby. A baby I had prayed for, dreamed about, spoken to quietly when no one else was around. And now, the doctor told me it was all over—as if it had never even begun.

I went home the next day, hands empty, heart aching.

But something unexpected happened, too. Somewhere deep inside, something else began to grow. Not a child—but something spiritual. A seed of understanding, planted in pain.

When I opened my eyes after surgery, still foggy from the anesthesia, I whispered, “Thank You, Hashem.”

It wasn’t the kind of thank You I thought I’d say—coming home with a new baby, holding them close. It was a different thank You. One that came from a place of surrender, from knowing that even this was somehow for the good. A thank You with tears in it. A thank You that said, “I don’t understand… but I trust You.”

Looking back, I realize how powerful that moment was. It was the first step in my healing. The beginning of a new way of seeing the world.

And since that day, I haven’t stopped saying thank You.

That first thank you led to more. And every thank you brought blessings I never expected.

Baruch Hashem, I’m now the mother of four beautiful children. But I truly believe the blessings started with that thank you—even in heartbreak. Gratitude changed my life.

I wish more people knew what I discovered. Saying thank you, even when it’s hard, protects us. It softens the pain. It opens the door to miracles. If we really understood how powerful gratitude is, we’d say thank you from morning until night.

Even now, with all the challenges in the world, I still say thank You. Because every thank you brings another reason to say it again.

So don’t wait. Start now. Whether you’re hurting, waiting, or just unsure—say thank you. Even if it’s a whisper. Even if it’s through tears.

It’s not just a nice thing to do—it can truly change your life. I’m living proof.
