"Thank you." A small word, yet its meaning is immense. This short phrase holds more power than we might realize. In fact, it can unlock entire worlds of blessings. But sometimes, we fail to notice its significance—especially when we focus on the things that seem missing in our lives. We often complain about our finances, our relationships, or our challenges with raising children. We might even feel that our spouse doesn’t do enough at home. We think we lack something—but is that truly the case?

The truth is, what we’re often lacking is gratitude. If we could simply practice thankfulness for what we have—and even for what we don’t have—our lives would look completely different. Gratitude helps us see the blessings in all things, big and small.

Our busy lives can make it easy to forget this simple truth. How often do we forget to say "thank you," even for the simplest blessings? In Judaism, we start each day with a prayer called Modeh Ani—"I thank." The first word is "Modeh," which means "thank you." If we have the gift of life, we must give thanks. Gratitude comes before everything else because, as Jews, it is a core part of our identity. If we don’t recognize the good around us, how will we ever notice the kindness that Hashem, our Creator, constantly bestows upon us?

So many positive changes happen when we start to genuinely work on gratitude. Yet, when we ask people why they don’t express gratitude for what they have, we often hear responses like, "It’s hard for me," "I’ve been waiting too long," or "What do I have to be thankful for?" Even those who feel they thank others regularly may find that unless they make it a daily practice, gratitude won’t truly become a part of their lives.

Around the world, many people—Jewish and non-Jewish alike—are discovering the powerful impact of gratitude. It’s a tool that can change lives, and it’s rooted deeply in the Torah. We have been blessed with the ability to transform our lives through gratitude. So, why not take full advantage of it right now? Here are six beautiful reasons to start practicing gratitude today:

The First Reason: Emulating Hashem

Hashem created us in His image, and we are commanded to "equalize our form" with Him. As He is merciful, we must also show mercy. As He is gracious, we must be gracious too. Our Sages teach us that when we deny the goodness of others, we may be denying Hashem’s goodness as well. Gratitude helps us recognize and appreciate the blessings in our lives, and by thanking Hashem for everything, we fulfill a key mitzvah (commandment) and bring joy to the Creator.

A simple way to nurture this gratitude is to create a "gratitude box." Take a shoebox, decorate it, and each day, write down at least five things you’re thankful for. At the end of the month, share your thank-yous with your family. This practice helps teach our children to appreciate blessings, and it reminds us to stay grateful, too.

The Second Reason: Sweetening Life’s Challenges

We all face challenges, both internal and external. At times, we might feel overwhelmed or burdened, but Rabbi Tal Mashash teaches that gratitude can help sweeten these difficulties. When we thank Hashem for everything—both the good and the challenging—we can see how everything is part of a greater, divine plan. Gratitude helps us shift our perspective and approach difficulties with a sense of peace and trust in Hashem’s wisdom.

The Third Reason: Creating New Abundance

When we express gratitude, our brains respond positively, radiating calm and satisfaction. Suddenly, we stop comparing ourselves to others and begin to feel content with what we have right here and now. The Torah tells us that Hashem created us "a little lower than the divine beings," which means we are designed to appreciate the goodness in our lives. Gratitude gives us a taste of abundance, even when we feel like we don’t have everything we want. By focusing on what we have, we can create new blessings and deepen our sense of fulfillment.

The Fourth Reason: Never Taking Anything for Granted

Do you have your health? A family? Friends? A roof over your head? These are all gifts from Hashem, and none of them should be taken for granted. Gratitude helps remind us of the blessings we often overlook. We might forget that millions of people around the world are struggling with basic needs that we often take for granted. When we pause to give thanks, we are reminded of how much we truly have, and we learn to value every blessing, no matter how small.

The Fifth Reason: Shaping Our Awareness

We all have the power to choose where we focus our attention. If we consciously choose to focus on gratitude, we begin to see the good in every situation. Saying "thank you" helps shift our awareness toward positivity and joy. The more we practice gratitude, the more we connect to ourselves, to Hashem, and to those around us. Even in challenging moments, we can ask ourselves, "Where is the good hidden in this situation?" And by acknowledging it, we strengthen our awareness of Hashem’s presence in our lives.

The Sixth Reason: Returning Our Soul

When we say "thank you," we are essentially returning our soul to its rightful place. Gratitude helps us reconnect with ourselves and recognize the blessings we’ve been given. It’s as if we’ve emerged from a place of darkness and moved toward light—shifting from sadness to joy, from ignorance to wisdom. Gratitude brings us back to the clarity and peace we need to face life’s challenges with strength and resilience.

By practicing gratitude every day, we open ourselves to a deeper connection with Hashem, with others, and with our true selves. Let’s not wait any longer—start today, and watch as gratitude transforms your life.
