The Driver Didn’t See Me—But Hashem Was Watching

The accident could have changed my life forever. Instead, it became a moment of faith and deep gratitude.

#VALUE!

A year and several months ago, I was in a traffic accident—during a shidduch (matchmaking) date, of all times. We were walking along, chatting, and I made sure, as always, to cross only at the pedestrian crossings.

There was a car at the crossing that had stopped, giving the right of way to those coming from its right. I saw that it was standing still, and assumed it was safe to cross. What I didn’t think to check was whether the driver had actually looked in our direction.

I stepped onto the crosswalk and took a few steps—when suddenly the car began to move. The driver hit me without realizing it, and even as I fell, he didn’t seem to notice. The young man I was with quickly knocked on the car and told the driver he had hit me.

They helped me up, and the driver got out of the car—but didn’t offer help. He said he was in a hurry. Thankfully, we managed to write down his license plate number and phone number.

Still a little shaken, I turned to the young man and said, “No one even honked at him!” And that’s when he pointed out another miracle I hadn’t considered: If someone had honked, the driver might have panicked and kept driving forward—and the injury could have been far worse, chas v’shalom (Heaven forbid).

After the accident, I managed to walk away on my own. At first, I only felt dizzy and had a headache. But on the way home, I began to feel pain in my left arm and leg—the places that had taken the impact. I went to the hospital, where they didn’t find anything serious and sent me home.

The next morning, however, I woke up in pain and went to my clinic. They sent me straight back to the hospital for more tests. Baruch Hashem (thank G-d), the results were good. They gave me IV painkillers and sent me home. But over time, I discovered that the accident had caused herniated discs in my back and neck, as well as hearing loss.

Even so, I’m deeply grateful. With everything I went through, the outcome could have been much worse. Hashem, in His kindness, protected me from what could have been lifelong disability.

Two months later, I held a seudat hoda’ah—a meal to thank Hashem publicly and to share the miracle He did for me. I pray to the Ribbono shel Olam (Master of the Universe) that I may continue to recognize and share His wonders, and that we all learn to see His light in our lives, every day.
