We Prayed, and Hashem Answered—Our Daughter Was Saved

We almost lost our baby girl—but prayers and Hashem’s miracles carried us through the darkest nights.

It began on the Shabbat after Rosh Hashanah, 5778.

Our two-month-old daughter suddenly woke up with a high fever. We gave her Acamol (children’s paracetamol), hoping it was something mild that would pass. The fever did go down, but instead, she began vomiting—again and again. All through Shabbat she was sick, and by the end of the day, she had become dehydrated.

As soon as Shabbat ended, we rushed her to the on-call doctor.

The doctor gave her a quick check, mostly just to be cautious—but we could see it in his eyes. He knew right away something was wrong. “You need to get to the hospital. Right now,” he told us.

We were taken by ambulance to Hadassah Mount Scopus in Jerusalem. Right when we arrived, the nurse on duty noticed that the baby’s fontanelle—the soft spot on her head—was bulging. Without wasting a moment, she took a sample of spinal fluid. About an hour later, the results came back: meningitis.

By incredible hashgacha pratit (Divine Providence), the illness had been caught early. And thanks to the sharp and quick-thinking nurse, our daughter’s life was saved.

We were admitted into the intensive care unit for two and a half weeks—right during the Aseret Yemei Teshuvah, the Ten Days of Repentance between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Time lost all meaning. Day and night became one.Our tiny baby had to go through several brain scans. The doctors found blood clots in her little veins. And then came the scariest moments—when she started convulsing for long, frightening minutes that felt like forever.

We never left her bedside. Our family looked after our other four children while we sat in the hospital, praying and holding on to hope.

The worst part was the unknown. What would be the long-term effects of the illness? Was there brain damage, G-d forbid?

Eventually, when she began to improve, another scan was done. With great siyata dishmaya (Heavenly help), it showed that she was recovering. It finally felt like we might be heading home.

And so we did—after two and a half long weeks, on the eve of Simchat Torah. We danced that night, celebrating not just the Torah, but the miracle of our daughter’s health.

But just four days later, she started vomiting again.

This time, we didn’t wait. We returned immediately to Mount Scopus. Because of her medical history, they admitted her right away to keep her under observation.

Two days passed, and the doctors couldn’t figure out what was causing the vomiting. Then, an infection was found in her body. We were pulled back into a storm of tests and scans.

This time, the scan revealed something even more frightening—bleeding in her brain, which was putting pressure on it. She would need head surgery.

We were transferred to Hadassah Ein Kerem, where our tiny baby underwent brain surgery.

Through the endless compassion of the Ribbono Shel Olam (Master of the World), our prayers—and the prayers of so many around us—were not returned empty. Our baby came out of the surgery healthy and whole.

Today, at five months old, she is doing beautifully. All her tests are normal. Aside from a small scar on her head, there is no sign that anything ever happened.

This is our miracle.

Thank You, Hashem, for giving us the privilege to feel Your presence so closely throughout this journey.

Thank you to the devoted staff at Hadassah Mount Scopus, Children’s Department A—especially Professor Berkun and Dr. Brooks. The nurses became like family to us during that month.

Thank you to the brain surgeon, Dr. Shweiki, and the entire pediatric surgery team at Ein Kerem.

And thank you to our wonderful family and neighbors who stood by us through every moment.
