An antisemitic assault was reported on a New York City subway train involving a group of Chabad-Lubavitch students returning from Chanukah outreach activities in Manhattan, according to reports and video footage circulating on social media.
The students were traveling back from Chanukah mivtzaim when they were confronted on the subway by two individuals identified as a father and son. The confrontation began with verbal antisemitic insults and cursing directed at the group.
According to the reports, the harassment escalated into physical violence, with one member of the group assaulted after an attacker grabbed him by the neck while continuing to curse the group over their Jewish identity. Video footage later shared online shows part of the confrontation and captures one of the Jewish students who was attacked exiting the subway at the next stop, after which the incident came to an end. Following the assault, a complaint was filed with the New York Police Department. As of now, police have not announced any arrests or released additional details regarding the investigation.
Chabad Chanukah outreach activities, commonly referred to as mivtzaim, involve volunteers traveling throughout cities to distribute menorahs, assist with candle-lighting, and engage Jews in public spaces during the holiday. The volunteers, like the ones in the video, are often visibly identifiable as Jewish while using public transportation.
The reported assault comes amid continued concern over antisemitic incidents in New York City, particularly those targeting visibly Jewish individuals in public settings. Jewish community members have repeatedly warned of harassment and violence on city streets and mass transit, though officials stress that each case is investigated individually.
No injuries were reported in this incident, and the group was able to leave the scene safely. The incident remains under investigation, and no further updates have been issued by law enforcement.
