Recent archaeological work has brought to light parts of what was once the Great Synagogue complex of Vilna. This synagogue was destroyed by the Soviets after World War II, and now its remnants appear to be rising again from obscurity.

The complex and synagogue suffered significant damage during the war and were actually buried beneath the land where a school was later built. A team of archaeologists, led by Professor Richard Freund of the University of Hartford, conducted extensive excavations at the site. Experts from the UK, Canada, Israel, and Lithuania joined the project.

The researchers employed a unique technique that allowed them to identify objects buried underground without disrupting the surface infrastructure. At the end of their work, they unveiled what appear to be staircases leading to underground levels. This led them to conclude that these underground levels were part of a building within the Great Synagogue complex.

Markas Zingeris, Director of the State Vilna Gaon Museum, stated in a press release that scientific testing will be conducted on the findings, and the results are not yet certain. What is known for certain is that the complex once served as the center of one of Eastern Europe's largest and most important communities, which included the Vilna Gaon.
