A 3,400-year-old fortress has been discovered during the construction of a new residential tower and underground parking garage on Balfour Street in Nahariya.
The findings indicate that the city of Nahariya had trade and cultural connections with Mediterranean countries. It seems the exposed fortress served as an administrative center catering to sailors traveling the Mediterranean coast 3,400 years ago. There was likely a harbor near the fortress, and many artifacts were found in its rooms, including clay figurines of humans and animals, bronze weapons, and imported pottery.
The fortress contained an abundance of grain, legumes, and grapes, suggesting the types of supplies used by the seafarers.
The remnants of the fortress will be integrated into the residential tower itself, in the building's basement, for the enjoyment of residents and visitors.
