Many people are not aware of the profound impact the teachings of Judaism have had across the world. The Torah was the first to introduce the concept of a single, eternal, and infinite Divine Being who created the world: "In the beginning, Hashem created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). Before the Torah, the people of the world were all polytheists, worshipping idols.
Where did the belief in idols come from? Well, one justification for idolatry came from a primitive understanding of nature. For example, people noticed that water extinguishes fire, leading them to believe in separate deities for fire and water, each battling over control of these elements. Ancients believed in a sun god, a moon god, a deity in charge of life, and another overseeing death. Their prayers were directed at different gods according to their needs.
Over 4,000 years ago, our forefather Abraham challenged this childish view of reality, explaining to idol worshippers that the entire universe operates in harmony: the sun and the moon move in sync with their mechanical motion, keeping to precise timings, with no "fights" amongst them. There's a delicate ecological balance between all living things, and this harmony testifies to one Creator who made everything with a purpose.
Modern science has uncovered exactly this: there is unity in creation. It turns out that fire and water are not made of different components, nor gold and wood, water and earth, or sun and moon. If in the past these materials seemed very different, science has revealed that all materials in the universe are made of the same substance: atoms. And all atoms are made of the same subatomic particles. The external differences stem from their atomic structures, much like Lego bricks which can be assembled into various forms.
Modern physics has further discovered that matter and energy are simply different expressions of the same reality, allowing matter to transform into energy and vice versa.
It has also been revealed that the same natural laws operate in harmony throughout the universe. For instance, the force of gravity affects the sun and the moon just as it does enormous galaxies and a small apple falling from a tree! After science demonstrated that all forces and materials behave uniformly, a scientific testimony emerged to support the fact that there is one Creator who made the entire universe and oversees everything within it.
To illustrate: a clock is built from various components working in coordination, with a battery, many gears, and hands, yet they all have one purpose—to tell time. Similarly, all natural forces operate in harmony, like different pieces of the same puzzle, thus attesting to the unity of the Creator who made everything for the purpose of His will.
Science advances and reveals what Abraham taught, and what was heard at Mount Sinai 3,300 years ago: "Hear, O Israel: Hashem is our God, Hashem is one" (Deuteronomy 6:4).
