Tired of Nagging Coughs? Discover the Benefits of Pear Juice

A persistent cough can be unbearable and disrupt daily life. Drinking boiled pear juice as a natural cough syrup is a traditional method to soothe throat irritation and improve cough symptoms. But does it really work?

Having battled bronchitis for nearly a month, and alarming those around me with a cough reminiscent of an 85-year-old heavy smoker (though I don't smoke), I was on a constant quest for relief. After a visit to the doctor and a lung X-ray (because, really, nobody wants pneumonia), the doctor called with the good news: "You don't have pneumonia, thank Hashem. You have bronchitis."

A quick Google search revealed that acute bronchitis is an infection of the bronchi – the airways that lead air from the windpipe to the air sacs of the lungs. Any respiratory virus can cause acute bronchitis, including the flu virus. The main symptom of bronchitis is a persistent cough, with or without phlegm, and there may be a fever (as is common with viral infections). Usually, symptoms like a runny nose, headache, and sore throat will precede the cough by a few days.

That was exactly what happened to me.

"What can be done about bronchitis?" I inquired, hoping for an antibiotic prescription to quickly end the saga.

"I'm prescribing you syrup," the doctor kindly replied and directed me to the nearest pharmacy.

Along with the syrup, which helped partially, I embarked on a journey to find a natural remedy to ease my discomfort.

I tried several things (honey with onion, herbal teas with honey, vitamins), all of which helped to some degree, but I discovered something I hadn't known in my previous bouts with cough: boiled pear juice.

Turns out pears contain antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that can help soothe the respiratory system and reduce irritation caused by infections or colds. Additionally, pears have natural moisturizing properties, which help keep the throat hydrated and reduce the dryness that leads to persistent coughing.

Since I did experience some relief from the cough, I decided not to keep all the goodness to myself, so here it is for you.

How to Make Boiled Pear Juice for Cough

Ingredients Needed:

  • 2-3 ripe pears with skins on.
  • 2 cinnamon sticks.
  • A small piece of ginger.

  • Cut 2-3 ripe pears into small pieces to allow juices to be released more effectively. No need to peel.
  • Place in a pot with cinnamon sticks, ginger, and 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil while gently stirring.

  • After boiling, reduce the heat and simmer on low for about 20 to 30 minutes until the water absorbs the flavor and nutrients from the pears.
  • Strain and drink the warm liquid with a teaspoon of honey to enhance the soothing effect, especially before bedtime, to aid in a peaceful, cough-free sleep.

Feel better soon!
