Sweating is a natural and important process. When the body sweats more than usual, it’s often trying to get rid of excess waste especially if other detox pathways, like the pores or digestive system, aren’t working as well. Instead of rushing to block the sweat, it’s better to gently explore the cause and support the body in doing what it’s designed to do.

In the meantime, here are some time-tested remedies passed down from our grandmothers and rooted in the healing teachings of Rambam (Maimonide that may help ease discomfort from excessive sweating while encouraging overall balance:

Zaatar (Wild Oregano)
Zaatar is well known in traditional Jewish and Middle Eastern medicine for its many healing properties. It can help calm excessive sweating by improving digestion and supporting the elimination of mucus and other bodily waste. By boosting the body’s ability to release toxins through digestion and other channels, it takes some of the burden off the sweat glands.

Myrtle Leaves (Hadass)
Washing the skin with myrtle leaves can help reduce unpleasant odors and is considered effective for those dealing with excess perspiration. You can fill a bathtub with warm water and add dried or fresh myrtle leaves. Soaking in this water and gently scrubbing the skin may help refresh the body and soothe the skin.

Henna (Hina)
Henna isn’t just for artistic use. In traditional healing, it has internal benefits too. Mix a small amount of henna powder with water and drink it. This is believed to help the body cool down and may support internal cleansing. Be sure to consult with a healthcare provider before trying this, especially if you have other health conditions.

Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is always a good idea, but especially helpful when the body is overheated or sweating excessively. These foods are full of water and dietary fiber, which helps the body release waste through the digestive system rather than the skin. Think of them as gentle internal cleansers that help hydrate and balance the body from within.

Caring for our bodies is not just physical, it’s spiritual, too. In Judaism, honoring the body is a way of honoring the gift of life Hashem gave us. Listening to our body’s signals, and supporting it with natural, thoughtful remedies, is part of living with mindfulness and gratitude.

To your health—refuah shleimah (a full and gentle healing)!
