When we catch a cold, our body is trying to expel waste usually through mucus like a runny or stuffy nose. Instead of fighting this natural cleansing, Jewish tradition, especially the teachings of the Rambam (Maimonides), encourages us to support the body in its healing. With a little help from the kitchen and Hashem’s kindness, we can strengthen ourselves and recover more smoothly. Here are some beloved remedies from Grandma, passed down through generations and still helpful today.

Za’atar
This beloved herb, common in Middle Eastern Jewish homes, is known for its powerful benefits during a cold. It helps clear mucus from the lungs and strengthens the body’s defenses. You can drink za’atar as tea. If you’re dealing with a cough, rubbing za’atar oil on your chest can bring comfort.

Chamomile
Chamomile calms the body and supports the immune system. It’s also useful in bringing down fever. You can soak the plant in water for a few days or boil it and drink the tea warm.

Turmeric
Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. It’s packed with healing properties that are especially useful during a cold. Mix half a tablespoon of turmeric in a glass of warm water and sip slowly. You can also add turmeric to soups and cooked dishes for extra benefit.

Fennel
Rich in iron, vitamins, and minerals, fennel helps ease cold symptoms and even relieves headaches. You can enjoy fennel raw, or make a soothing tea from its seeds.

Mustard
Mustard supports the removal of mucus and helps open the airways. Mustard seeds or mustard oil extract are available in pharmacies or natural health stores. They are helpful during a cold, especially when congestion is strong.

Cinnamon and Lemon
Cinnamon tea on its own is warming and comforting, and when mixed with fresh squeezed lemon juice, it becomes a powerful remedy. Together, they support the body in fighting off cold symptoms.

Sage
Sage tea is another wonderful herbal option to drink during a cold. It helps clear the sinuses and calm inflammation in the throat.

Grapefruit
This citrus fruit is loaded with vitamin C and helps the immune system stay strong. Grapefruit can be eaten fresh or juiced.

These remedies remind us that healing can often begin at home with Hashem’s guidance, natural ingredients, and the wisdom passed down by those who came before us. Rambam himself, one of the greatest Torah sages and physicians in Jewish history, taught that the body and soul are deeply connected. When we nourish one, we uplift the other.

To your health—refuah shleimah (a complete and gentle healing)!
