Heartburn can be uncomfortable and distracting. It’s usually caused by acidity rising in the esophagus, the tube that connects your throat to your stomach. This acidity can come from certain foods or drinks, or even from stomach acid pushing its way upward.

The RambamR, abbi Moshe ben Maimon (Maimonides), one of the greatest Torah scholars and physicians in Jewish history, taught that a healthy body allows a person to serve Hashem with joy and strength. When it comes to heartburn, the Rambam’s approach emphasizes eating wisely, understanding our bodies, and supporting natural healing.

Grandma’s Healing Advice

To begin, try avoiding foods and drinks that create acidity. That includes coffee, alcohol, spicy dishes, and processed foods. If you want to go deeper, Grandma suggests taking a break from animal proteins for a week. This gives your digestive system time to rest and often brings noticeable relief. Our stomach works hard to digest meat, and without it, the acid levels may go down naturally, helping to calm heartburn.

Lupin Flour Drink
One of Grandma’s classic remedies is flour made from lupin seeds mixed with warm water. It may sound simple, but this traditional drink has been found to soothe heartburn.

Soaked Almonds
Raw almonds, soaked and peeled, are another favorite. They help balance the acidity in the stomach and are full of protein, fiber, minerals, and antioxidants. They're nourishing and gentle on the digestive system.

Cucumber or Cucumber Juice
Cucumbers are refreshing and soothing. You can eat them raw or drink the juice. They're full of vitamin B, calcium, potassium, and fiber, all of which help ease the burning sensation.

Sage Tea and Mint Tea
A warm cup of sage tea or mint tea can do wonders for calming the stomach and reducing heartburn. These herbs have been used for generations and remain a staple in many Jewish kitchens.

These gentle remedies not only bring physical relief but also connect us to the healing wisdom of our ancestors reminding us that the Torah sees the body and soul as deeply connected.

To your health and well-being—refuah shleimah!
