Our skin often reflects what’s happening inside. Whether it’s a temporary breakout or a chronic skin condition like psoriasis, eczema, or acne, Jewish tradition reminds us that true healing comes from within.
According to the Rambam (Maimonides), many skin issues stem from internal imbalances, things like unhealthy food, emotional stress, or exposure to toxins such as harsh cleaning agents or polluted air. These imbalances try to exit the body, and the skin becomes the outlet. That’s why it’s so important not only to treat the symptoms but to look at the root causes.
Grandma’s Trusted Remedies for Healthy Skin
Turmeric – This golden spice is known for its strong anti-inflammatory powers and is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. You can drink it by mixing half a tablespoon into a glass of water, or cook with it to enrich your meals. For skin issues, soak gauze or cotton in turmeric water and apply it to inflamed areas.
Aloe Vera – A gentle and natural way to soothe irritated skin. The gel from this plant calms redness, itching, and even small burns. It’s especially helpful for sensitive or inflamed skin.
Myrtle Leaves (hadas) – Myrtle is one of the four species used on Sukkot, but it also has healing properties. To use it for skin conditions, dry the leaves, crush them, and mix with olive oil to make a soothing balm. Myrtle can also be steeped in hot water to make a tea that supports internal cleansing.
Lemon – Lemon is rich in vitamin C and essential minerals. Drinking warm water with squeezed lemon first thing in the morning helps purify the blood, which in turn can improve skin health. You can also apply a compress soaked in lemon water to skin irritations like eczema, small wounds, or burns. Just be cautious with open skin, as lemon may sting.
Apples – An apple a day doesn’t just keep the doctor away, it also helps with digestion. Better digestion means the body can eliminate waste more efficiently, which leads to clearer skin. Apples support blood purification from the inside out.
In Jewish tradition, taking care of the body is part of avodat Hashem, serving G-d. Our bodies are a gift from the Creator, and keeping them healthy allows us to live with energy and purpose.
