Hair loss is something many people quietly struggle with, but in Jewish tradition, we know that healing begins from the inside out. According to the Rambam, Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon, a great Torah scholar and physician, our bodies thrive when we care for them with wholesome foods and wise habits. Grandma, too, had her tried-and-true tips, many of which line up beautifully with Rambam’s teachings.

One of the most common reasons for hair loss is an unhealthy diet. That’s why the first step in healing is to nourish your body with plenty of vitamins and minerals. This means eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, and cutting down on processed and unhealthy foods.

A specific vitamin known to support hair growth is biotin, one of the B vitamins. You can find it naturally in foods like almonds, eggs, and green vegetables.

A tip from Grandma: Make sure your almonds are raw and not roasted. For best results, soak them in water for a few hours, peel off the skins, and eat them that way.

Green vegetables like lettuce and chard are packed with antioxidants that support healthy skin and hair. You can eat them, of course, but you can also blend them into a mixture and apply it directly to your hair as a nourishing treatment.

Here are a few more of Grandma’s trusted remedies for hair loss:

Boil rosemary leaves in water and use the water as a rinse for your hair. Rosemary is known to stimulate the scalp and strengthen hair follicles.

Boil plum leaves in water and massage the cooled liquid into your scalp. This can help improve circulation and support hair growth.

Boiling fenugreek (hilbeh in Hebrew) in water and using it to wash your hair helps get rid of dandruff and keeps the scalp healthy.

One beloved recipe comes from Rebbetzin Batsheva Kanievsky, a well-known Jewish role model. She recommended mixing one egg yolk with a tablespoon of olive oil, a tablespoon of castor oil, and a few drops of lemon juice. After washing your hair, apply this mixture and let it sit for about twenty minutes before rinsing. Do this once a week until you see improvement. Many people have found great success with this blend.

Remember, healing your hair starts with kindness to your whole self. Eat well, stay calm, and let these gentle remedies support you on your journey to health.

To your health!
