#VALUE!

It's Friday night and you've just lit the Shabbat candles. Everyone is dressed beautifully, the house is filled with Shabbat aromas, and yet... you feel like something is missing. Yes, your ring. You remember that while cooking, you placed it in the drawer where all the baking utensils are kept and now that drawer is muktzeh! *

Do you have to forget about your ring until after Shabbat?

The answer is no -- but let's see why.

You are permitted to open the drawer to retrieve your ring, as one can rely on the opinion that the ring, being more valuable than the muktzeh items, determines the status of the drawer, and one is only indirectly moving the baking utensils while opening the drawer in order to retrieve the ring.

However, once the ring has been removed, one should be stringent and regard the drawer as muktzeh, given that in the usual event, it contains only items that may not be used on Shabbat. Therefore, the drawer should be closed with a shinui (a different way of doing the action) such as by pushing it closed with an elbow or foot.

* Muktzeh refers to any item that will in the usual course of events not be used on Shabbat, most usually because it is only used to perform actions that are forbidden on Shabbat (such as a telephone). Since one may not bake on Shabbat, items such as rolling pins, cookie cutters etc. are muktzeh.
