#VALUE!
It's Friday night and your family is just about to complete the Shabbat meal. After the melodious songs, delicious foods, and inspiring words of Torah, you've reached the final course. You smile as you imagine your children's delight at the home-made ice cream, and you take out the chocolate syrup and the ice cream scoop to start assembling the dessert. But... wait a minute. Is it okay to shape the ice cream and drizzle patterns on top, on Shabbat?
The answer:
It is permissible to randomly drizzle chocolate syrup on the ice cream, provided one does not create a specific design or write numbers or letters.
Regarding the ice cream scoop -- if your purpose in using it is solely to make it easier to serve the ice cream, then that's fine, even if it does happen to make pretty spherical shapes. However, sculpting a special shape with the help of the scoop is forbidden according to halachah, as it is considered like creating a drawing.
To summarize:
Chocolate syrup - You're allowed to drizzle, but drawing shapes or writing letters or numbers is forbidden.
Ice cream scoop- If the scoop is just a convenient serving tool then there's no halachic problem. However, it is forbidden to use it to sculpt an image of any kind.
