As I write these lines, I'm unsure what the situation with COVID-19 will be globally and in Israel by the time you read this. What is certain is that this virus is spreading, showing effects similar to the flu and other viruses with comparable symptoms.
Natural medicine views the flu as an opportunity to rest, recharge, and let the immune system work its best through fever, which accelerates metabolism and aids bodily recovery. During this time, the body cleanses itself of accumulated toxins, using the virus to its advantage—for cleansing. A weak immune system, due to an unhealthy lifestyle—poor nutrition, lack of exercise, and lack of sleep, among others—will make a person more prone to viral illnesses like the flu, etc. In the cases of flu and COVID-19, the body expels toxins through respiration, seen as mucus and phlegm.
In principle, healthy individuals who catch such a virus should rest (muscle relaxation) and fast (digestive system rest) for a day or two (drinking water is essential to avoid dehydration). This way, most energy goes to detoxification and quick healing. If water fasting is difficult during fever, here are the recommendations:
1. Most highly recommended: water fasting for one to two days with vitamin C (dosage as needed). Remember, infants and adults alike generally aren't hungry when feverish (and this isn't random).
2. If step 1 is hard—drink herbal teas with lemon and fruit juices diluted with water.
3. If step 2 is hard—drink pureed vegetable soup alongside step 2.
4. Least recommended during fever—consuming raw fruits and vegetables.
Individuals with underlying health conditions – should consult their doctor regarding the above advice.
It's important to understand that complications from viral illnesses like the flu arise because people tend to reduce the fever, thus restoring appetite and disrupting the body's natural cleansing process. Fever up to 104°F benefits the body and shortens illness duration. It's advisable to keep the head cool with cold compresses, changing them periodically.
