Did you know? Combining foods like starch and protein can weigh down your digestive system.

Starch (carbohydrates – bread, potatoes, etc.) requires the enzyme ptyalin found in saliva, which breaks down carbs and needs an alkaline environment in the stomach. Protein (eggs, fish, meat, and milk) needs the enzyme pepsin, which thrives in an acidic stomach environment. These conditions counteract each other, leading to fermentation in the stomach that can eventually cause decay in the digestive system, gas, and other discomforts.

Eating these combinations at the same meal can cause digestion "blockages" and some of the food remains in the body, leading to drowsiness and potentially developing illnesses, as Maimonides suggested: Eating on another meal is a danger to the body's health. Due to this process, the digestive system works hard all day.

How many of you indulge in these "winning" combos? Bread with cheese or egg? A wrap with shawarma? Pizza? Chicken with potatoes? We all make these mistakes. All day long!

What are the risks?

1. Insomnia caused by excess toxins in the blood, leading to reliance on sleep aids.

2. Overburdened digestion resulting in gas, hemorrhoids, fissures, and constipation – all stem from problematic eating, as Maimonides noted.

3. Intestinal disorders, including yeast infections and H. pylori bacteria. When these occur, antibiotics or conventional medications are often prescribed, which may not always be effective (may Hashem have mercy).

4. Exhausted pancreas and overall fatigue of the system, leading to waste accumulation and diseases prominent in the Western world: high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer (may it not happen), and primarily obesity.

5. Mental health issues: Depression, attention deficit disorders, and hyperactivity.

What can you do? Try separating carbs from proteins for a week. If you eat animal protein (chicken, fish, eggs), pair it with a large salad. Plant-based protein is preferable – grains and legumes are the healthiest choice.

If you choose carbohydrates, also eat them with a large salad, and you'll notice a positive change, with Hashem's help!

Another tip: Drink water (preferably mineral) only on an empty stomach, and consume a lot of fresh fruit on an empty stomach in the morning (never as a dessert, as that leads to digestive fermentation).

I promise, with Hashem's guidance, that even minor changes like these will make most of you feel much better, and you'll see significant improvement in various symptoms, including weight loss.
