Rediscovering Healing: The Power of Prayer Over Pills

True health and healing come significantly from prayer, which surpasses everything else!

Praying to Hashem for the health of body and soul is immensely important. There are countless stories of individuals who found salvation through prayer alone.

In biblical times, Hezekiah, the King of Israel (who was from the soul of the Messiah), hid the Book of Remedies—a book containing cures for every disease—because he saw in his divine insight that if people found a cure in the book, they would stray from Hashem and forget to pray. King Hezekiah thus redeemed prayer from its exile by hiding this book. Today, many of us turn to various natural and conventional medical treatments (and I mean no disrespect to caregivers and doctors, heaven forbid).
Alongside this, we pray a little and seek salvation from professionals. But we need to reverse this: invest more in prayer and seclusion, and less in spending money on treatments and doctors. Rabbi Nachman of Breslov said: "When prayer is redeemed, all remedies fall away, as healing comes through the word of Hashem... Then all doctors will be ashamed of their treatments, for no remedy will hold power, as all herbs return their strength to the prayer, the word of Hashem that is their ultimate source..." (Rabbi Nachman, Likutei Moharan, Part II, Torah 1, 11).
Rabbi Nachman teaches that praying to Hashem for healing is the most significant and powerful action, beyond any simple remedies we know. If people could see with the eyes of their souls (hidden under the veil of our physical bodies) the power of prayer, they would only pray all day and stop running to doctors to find cures! "I am Hashem, your healer." Then, all doctors would be embarrassed by the mighty power of Hashem compared to their limited knowledge gained in a few decades. With Hashem's help, the future is not far from us, and our righteous Messiah will reveal to us the truth of these matters: prayer, prayer, and more prayer. This will be his tool to conquer the world. We have no one to rely on but our Father in Heaven.

As Jews, we should strive to prevent suffering and preempt the cure to disease ("and you shall guard yourselves very well"). How? Even when a sickness is not yet manifest in the body and only Hashem knows of it, Rabbi Nachman says: "At the beginning of a disease's growth, before it manifests and becomes known, one could easily heal it, but then it is hidden, known only to Hashem. Yet by grasping the aspect of the word of Hashem, the aspect of prayer as mentioned above, healing is received from all things in the world, even from bread and water... I am Hashem, your healer... and it won't develop into a disease at all because it will be healed earlier, at its inception... by the word of Hashem, one can always be healed by anything in the world..." (ibid.). Explanation: When a hidden illness has yet to manifest in a body, it can be healed by prayer before it grows. Prayer is above all and stronger than any medicine! Even if the illness is severe, when holding the word of Hashem and praying wholeheartedly, believing only He can save, then healing comes from all things in the world, even from bread and water, and one may heal the illness before it manifests in the body! Because through prayer, one can be healed forever by any means in the world.
