#VALUE!

Many children with ADHD find real relief through medication and show noticeable improvement. But medication isn’t the right path for every child. There are certain situations where doctors may advise against using it, such as:

  • Children who don’t respond to any medication at all, this happens in about 40% of cases.

  • Children who benefit from medication but experience side effects so severe that it’s simply not worth continuing.

  • Children who have close family members with a history of mental health conditions, like depression or schizophrenia. For these children, certain medications might trigger or worsen hereditary mental health concerns.

  • Children with tics (sudden, repeated movements or sounds) that are made worse by the medication. In these cases, doctors may choose to avoid medication in order to not intensify the tic disorder.

  • Children who have some signs of ADHD, like difficulty focusing, but don’t meet all the criteria for a full diagnosis. These cases are often called “attention and concentration difficulties,” and medication may not be effective for them.

Interestingly, many children taking ADHD medication say they don’t feel much different. But those around them, parents, teachers, mentors, often notice a major change in behavior and ability to focus.

When a child takes medication, it’s usually only known to the parents, the child, and sometimes a teacher or tutor. But when they don’t take it, everyone can tell.

Food and Medication

ADHD medication often affects the brain’s “hunger center,” suppressing appetite. That’s why it’s so important for children to eat a good breakfast before taking their medicine. If they skip breakfast, it creates a conflict inside their body, they’re hungry, but have no appetite. This can lead to stress or anxiety and can actually undo the benefits of the medication. A nourishing meal before school can make a big difference.

What Medication Can and Can’t Do

Medication doesn’t turn children with ADHD into “typical” kids. It simply helps manage symptoms, and even that depends on a number of factors like the specific challenges the child faces, their emotional state, the dosage, and whether they have other learning issues.

But when medication does work, it opens a precious window of opportunity. The child is calmer, more focused, and better able to regulate themselves. That’s the best time to build important life skills and good habits, skills they may not have been able to develop without that extra support.

If a child is also getting one-on-one tutoring or classroom help, taking the medication during those sessions can really enhance their ability to learn, succeed, and feel proud. And that success invites more encouragement and praise which every child needs.

What Happens in Adulthood?

ADHD doesn’t disappear as children grow older, but it changes shape. Adults aren’t sitting in classrooms for hours, so their daily challenges are different. Physical restlessness may become inner impatience or difficulty staying on one task. In adulthood, people often don’t need medication or don’t benefit from it in the same way, so many stop taking it.

The Bigger Picture

Supporting a child with ADHD is about more than medication. It’s about encouragement, structure, patience, and understanding. When used wisely, medication can be part of the toolbox but it’s not the only tool. And it’s not always the right one.
