Peter Shankman is an author, speaker, and entrepreneur who lives with ADHD. He recently released a book about ADHD that quickly became a bestseller. In his book, Shankman reveals his unique method for managing his ADHD: instead of medication, he takes to skydiving. With over 500 jumps under his belt, Shankman claims that the adrenaline rush floods his brain with the chemicals it usually lacks, keeping him highly focused for hours afterward. He even brings his laptop to the drop zone to start working as soon as he's unhooked from his parachute!
If you have ADHD, you might not want to replicate Shankman's specific coping technique. However, you can certainly benefit from his other advice. In fact, these tips can help anyone become more focused and efficient, whether or not they have ADHD.
1. Create a Routine: A regular schedule helps the brain avoid confusion.
2. Limit Decisions: Making choices can waste time and energy, even over what clothes to wear. Simplify life by limiting options.
3. Prioritize Exercise: Working out is crucial for a functioning brain. Shankman says he sleeps in his workout clothes and keeps his bike next to his bed to eliminate excuses.
4. Maintain a Healthy Diet: Individuals with ADHD should focus on a protein-rich diet while avoiding sugars and empty carbs.
5. Allocate Time Wisely: Decide what you want to achieve and dedicate your time accordingly.
6. Know Your Limits: ADHD often drives extreme tendencies. For Shankman, this meant quitting alcohol as he couldn't stop at one drink, and steering clear of pizza since he couldn't eat just one slice. Recognize your challenges and steer away from temptations.
