A new study by Clalit Health Services, in collaboration with other international bodies, found that younger children in a school year are diagnosed with ADHD at a rate 20% higher than their peers. This led researchers to hypothesize that the diagnoses might be incorrect, resulting from the children's immaturity.

The surprising study examined data from over 400,000 children, aged 6 to 11. Participants were divided into three groups based on their birthdate: those born at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year. The results indicated that children born at the end of the school year were diagnosed with ADHD at a significantly higher percentage compared to those from the other two groups.

Following the findings, Professor Ran Balicer, Director of Clalit's Research Institute, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the younger children in a school year. He expressed, "We need to be aware of the challenges and difficulties faced by the younger kids in the year and provide them with appropriate support."

This surprising research won the "Outstanding Research Award" at the "Annual Conference of the National Institute for Health Services and Health Policy Research." In recent years, awareness of attention deficit disorders has increased, the number of diagnoses has grown, and many studies are being conducted in the field.

In their conclusion, the researchers noted that it's crucial to deeply examine the possibility that ADHD diagnoses in younger children in a school year are mistaken, primarily due to adaptation difficulties and lack of maturity. They recommend that before referring these children for an ADHD diagnosis, alternative referrals to psychologists and educational counselors should be considered.
