When low moods or feelings of depression creep into our lives, they can sometimes feel like a heavy cloud overshadowing everything. We find ourselves in a state where negative thoughts race through the mind and give us no rest.

In a letter from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, he responds to a woman who had suddenly fallen into depression.

Following is an excerpt from his letter: “I received both of your letters, but even in the second one I don’t see what exactly caused your lack of joy, or why you write that these feelings appeared suddenly. Since this (depression) has no real basis, it also cannot truly exist. As is said about the castor plant of Jonah: ‘It came into being overnight, and perished overnight.’ What’s important is not to dwell on depressive thoughts. These thoughts are not only contrary to a person’s natural state, but also go against the teachings of the Torah. The Torah is called a ‘Torat Chaim’ – a Living Torah – and it requires each and every one of us to serve G-d with joy. Serving G-d can and should be done every moment of our lives. You certainly know, even from your own experience, that when it’s hard to cope with a particular mood, the best way to deal with it is not to fight it directly, but to distract the mind and focus on other things and thoughts. The general motto for coping is what the verse says:
‘G-d made man upright, but they sought many calculations.’ So, these endless thoughts and negative ideas come from the human side – and we have the choice to dismiss them. And since you asked for my advice, I’ll conclude with this: Divert your attention from all the mental calculations and soul-searching, and move forward in life with faith in the Creator of the world. Remember that Divine Providence watches over every single one of us at every step and turn – not only in what we consider big moments, but in the tiniest details of life. This is one of the foundations of the Baal Shem Tov’s teachings, deeply explained in Chabad Chassidut. I await good news.”

The Rebbe’s words offer a powerful lesson in faith and emotional resilience. Divine supervision is constant, down to the smallest detail. When dark thoughts arise or feelings of sadness creep in, we must remember they are fleeting and have no real substance. The way to face them is through distraction, focusing on joy, and leaning on faith. By following the Rebbe’s advice, we can shift our mindset toward positivity and inner peace.
