#VALUE!
As the days grow shorter and darkness falls earlier, many people report feeling down. It's no coincidence, because seasonal changes can affect your emotional state. Following are simple and practical steps you can take to lift your spirits and improve your mood.
1. Catch the Sunlight
Even in winter, the sun still shines. Make the most of it. Step outside when the sun is out, and at home or work, keep your curtains open to let natural light in. Sunlight exposure is known to improve mood and support healthy sleep patterns.
2. Save Sleep for Nighttime
Avoid daytime naps. It may be tempting to fall asleep when you get home and it’s already dark, but it’s best to stay active and alert until your regular bedtime. Napping during the day can make it harder to fall asleep at night and leave you feeling groggy.
3. Get Moving
Exercise of any kind is a natural mood booster. Physical activity releases endorphins which are brain chemicals that fight depression and elevate your mood. Go for a walk in the afternoon to get both movement and sunlight in one shot.
4. Eat Balanced Meals
We all crave comfort food in the winter- usually high-carb, high-fat treats. While that’s understandable, it’s important to maintain a balanced diet that includes all food groups. Opt for nourishing, satisfying meals instead of pastries and junk food. Your body and mood will thank you.
5. Spiritual Uplift: Psalms for Emotional Healing
Reciting Psalms can be incredibly comforting and spiritually uplifting, especially during emotionally challenging times. Psalms 116 and 103 are particularly recommended as natural “remedies” for low mood.
Psalm 116 speaks of being heard by G-d, saved from despair, and restored to life. Psalm 103 is a song of praise, expressing deep gratitude for G-d's mercy, forgiveness, healing, and compassion.
Winter brings darkness, but with intentional actions, physical care, and spiritual connection, we can bring more light into our days.
