Depression and anxiety have become global phenomena in recent years. In the U.S. alone, approximately 6.8 million people suffer from anxiety disorders. A study published in the journal Phytomedicine sheds light on this issue and its symptoms, and even presents a natural method (among many) to help manage it.

The study found that women are more likely than men to develop anxiety, especially during adolescence. When left untreated, symptoms can worsen over time. Conventional medicine typically treats anxiety by chemically balancing neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine.

The most common anxiety symptoms in women include mental stress, exaggerated perception of problems, physical pain, fear of performing even the simplest tasks, chronic fatigue, difficulty concentrating, mood swings, trouble swallowing, irritability and inability to relax, excessive sweating, frequent dizziness, migraines, and/or shortness of breath, inner restlessness and a constant sense of being “on edge”, trembling or frequent shaking and difficulty falling asleep.

In most cases, women who turn to conventional medicine for anxiety are prescribed chemical medications such as Valium, Ativan (lorazepam), or Xanax. However, the study found that lavender oil was just as effective as lorazepam, without the side effects often experienced by those taking the drug.

Moreover, the study showed that lavender oil is not only calming for those suffering from anxiety and depression, but also provides medical relief for inflammation, migraines, joint pain, and even dementia.

How to Use Lavender Oil

Lavender oil is available in capsule form, but since these capsules are often expensive and not always easy to find in health stores, researchers offer a natural alternative: lavender tea made from dried lavender flowers.

If you do find the capsules and wish to take them, consult a healthcare professional first to determine proper dosage. (Note: capsules are strictly not for children.)

How to Prepare Lavender Tea

Place one tablespoon of dried lavender flowers in a tea strainer. Pour boiling water over it and drink. You can also place the flowers inside a small cloth pouch to make your own reusable tea bag and use it for multiple servings.
