In an article published by The Times of India, American neurologist Dr. Robert Luff recommends the daily consumption of three natural drinks that, according to him, may improve brain function, enhance concentration, and strengthen long-term memory.
The three drinks he highlights are green tea, purified water with magnesium, and organic coffee with MCT oil. “Recent studies suggest that these beverages provide bioactive compounds that protect neurons, boost mental energy, and reduce inflammation in the central nervous system,” he explains. “Incorporating these ingredients into your daily routine may lead to enhanced mental clarity, reduced forgetfulness, and better cognitive performance in learning, focus, and memory.”
Green Tea
Green tea, derived from the Camellia sinensis plant, is among the best-known beverages for positively impacting brain activity. It contains several active ingredients, especially L-theanine and the antioxidant EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate).
L-theanine has been shown in multiple studies to promote a calm and clear mental state, without the jitteriness or elevated heart rate commonly associated with other stimulants. When combined with a moderate amount of caffeine—naturally present in green tea—it creates a synergistic effect that improves cognitive responsiveness, concentration, and memory.
EGCG, on the other hand, is a powerful antioxidant that protects against oxidative stress, which can damage brain cells and accelerate cognitive decline and aging.
Organic Coffee with MCT Oil
When consumed wisely and with the right additions, coffee can be a valuable brain-boosting supplement. Dr. Luff recommends organic coffee, free of pesticides and additives, which delivers clean, natural caffeine. “Caffeine is a well-known neurological stimulant that activates the brain’s arousal and attention circuits. When combined with MCT oil (Medium Chain Triglycerides), derived from coconut or palm kernel oil, it provides added nutritional benefits,” says Dr. Luff.
MCT oil quickly converts into ketones—a highly efficient alternative energy source for brain cells. Research has found that ketones can improve memory function, particularly among older adults or those showing early signs of cognitive decline.
Purified Water with Magnesium
Those who consume purified water, such as distilled water or water treated via reverse osmosis, often drink mineral-deficient water. Replenishing magnesium using mineral drops or liquid supplements is a simple way to restore this essential nutritional balance.
According to Dr. Luff, magnesium supports synaptic plasticity—the brain’s ability to learn, plan, and remember. Therefore, it’s especially important to add magnesium if your primary water source lacks natural minerals.
