Eye health is one of the most overlooked areas, until problems arise. Vision deterioration, infections, and injuries are common, especially with age. While modern medicine offers advanced treatments and surgeries, it's always best to prevent reaching that stage. The good news is there are well-researched and proven ways to maintain healthy vision and avoid damage.

A study published in the journal Ophthalmology found that prolonged screen time without breaks significantly increases dry eyes and computer vision syndrome (CVS), which is marked by blurred vision, headaches, and eye fatigue. To combat this, experts recommend the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This simple habit can substantially reduce long-term eye strain.

Nutrition also plays a major role in eye health. Studies show that deficiencies in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A and C, and zinc increase the risk of macular degeneration which is one of the leading causes of vision loss in older adults. A diet rich in fatty fish, leafy greens, and nuts helps protect retinal cells and lowers the risk of degenerative eye diseases.

Sleeping with contact lenses significantly raises the risk of serious corneal infections. During sleep, oxygen flow to the eye decreases, and lenses can trap harmful bacteria. Even lenses approved for extended wear can cause damage, so the universal recommendation is to remove them before bed.

Unprotected sun exposure can cause cumulative damage to the retina and increase the risk of cataracts. High-quality sunglasses with UV filters are essential, especially in sunny countries like Israel. During a solar eclipse, never look directly at the sun, even for a second—only special eclipse glasses can provide true protection.

Regular eye exams are critical, even if there are no symptoms. Many eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy, develop slowly and silently. Early detection can prevent irreversible damage and, in some cases, save your vision entirely.

Smoking is one of the most significant risk factors for eye diseases, including macular degeneration and cataracts. Ophthalmologists warn that smokers are twice as likely to go blind in old age compared to non-smokers. Quitting smoking is one of the best health decisions you can make for your overall well-being and your eyesight.

Maintaining eye hygiene is vital. Never rinse contact lenses with tap water, as it may contain dangerous parasites. Always store lenses in proper solution and practice daily hygiene to avoid severe infections and even corneal transplants.
