A recent study finds that fast food consumption affects not only physical health but also cognitive performance. Researchers from the University of Queensland in Australia found that a diet high in fat and sugar can impair memory and learning abilities, even in the short term.
In the study, a group of healthy young adults was asked to consume a diet rich in fat and sugar, including burgers, fries, sweet snacks, and sugary drinks for five consecutive days. At the end of this period, participants took memory and cognitive tests. Results showed a significant decline in performance compared to their scores before the dietary change.
The researchers also found that fast food affects the hippocampus, a region of the brain responsible for memory and navigation, as well as appetite control. They observed that processed food consumption not only impaired memory but also increased hunger, even after eating sufficient amounts.
The scientists warn that long-term unhealthy eating patterns may lead to cumulative damage to memory and increase the risk of developing metabolic diseases. They emphasize the importance of maintaining a balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains to preserve brain and body health.
