Stay Warm: Tips to Prevent Hypothermia This Winter

As winter sets in and temperatures drop across the country, the risk of hypothermia increases. This condition, where body temperature falls below 95 degrees Fahrenheit, poses a serious health threat. "Hypothermia affects the body's systems and hampers normal functioning," explains Dr. Oded Waksberg, Head of Family Medicine at "Maccabi Healthcare Services" in an interview with Israel Hayom. 

According to him, symptoms of hypothermia include pale skin, shivering, fatigue, confusion, rapid breathing, and an accelerated heart rate. "In more severe cases, when the body temperature falls below 90 degrees, it becomes life-threatening," he warns.

To avoid this, Dr. Waksberg recommends wearing warm, insulating clothing, especially in exposed areas like the head and hands. Additionally, it is crucial to avoid alcohol consumption in cold weather. "Despite the warming sensation alcohol provides, it actually speeds up the loss of body heat," Dr. Waksberg explains.

If mild symptoms appear, the affected person should be moved to a warm place, remove wet clothing and wrap in warm blankets. If necessary, seek medical attention immediately. "Do not ignore early signs like confusion or shivering — these are warning signs that require immediate care," emphasizes Dr. Waksberg.

During this period, it's also important to focus on adequate hydration, as many tend to drink less in the cold, which can worsen the body's condition. "Ensuring enough fluid intake, a balanced diet, and light movement at home will help maintain body warmth," Dr. Waksberg concludes.
