Flying with a Cold: Hidden Risks You Shouldn’t Ignore

We've all been there: You're congested, but you have a flight coming up. The symptoms don’t seem too severe, so you wonder whether to stay home or proceed with your travel plans. It turns out, that flying while congested can put your health at significant risk.

If you're suffering from a cold or sinus infection, air travel could lead to medical conditions such as ear pain, hearing distortion, or even a ruptured eardrum. Ear barotrauma occurs when there is a sudden change in air pressure in the middle ear, especially during a flight. When we’re congested, the Eustachian tubes—which connect the middle ear to the nasal passages—may be blocked, leading to pressure buildup in the ear.

Barotrauma can also occur during other changes in altitude, such as diving or climbing to high elevations. While it may seem like a minor issue, barotrauma can lead to severe ear pain and hearing problems. In recent years, researchers have found that ear barotrauma can cause long-term damage to the middle ear and, in severe cases, even permanent hearing loss.

It’s best to avoid flying when experiencing a severe cold. However, if postponing your flight isn’t an option and your symptoms are mild, there are a few things you can do to ease the discomfort.

Decongestants and nasal sprays can help reduce swelling and improve air pressure regulation in the ears and staying well-hydrated and practicing swallowing or gentle breathing techniques may also provide relief. If you experience severe ear pain during the flight or symptoms such as vomiting, it’s important to consult a doctor immediately.
