Coffee, a daily staple for millions around the world, offers a wide range of health benefits when consumed in moderation. Recent studies suggest that drinking two to five cups a day may lower the risk of developing conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and even certain types of cancer. However, the specific type of coffee you drink plays a significant role in how healthy it actually is.

Filtered coffee, for example, is considered one of the healthiest options. Its paper filter helps remove compounds known to raise cholesterol, while still allowing beneficial antioxidants to pass through. This filtering process also reduces diterpenes- natural substances that can increase cholesterol levels- while preserving key nutrients like chlorogenic acid.

What about cold brew? This trendy drink, made by steeping coffee beans in cold water for several hours, is less acidic and often better tolerated by people who are prone to heartburn. It also retains higher levels of antioxidants. Keep in mind that it may contain more caffeine, which can lead to side effects like restlessness or trouble sleeping.

Espresso, despite its popularity, contains higher concentrations of both caffeine and diterpenes. This makes it a less ideal choice for those with high cholesterol or caffeine sensitivity. Cappuccinos and lattes, on the other hand, provide some added protein from the milk, but it's important to watch out for added sugars and excess calories from flavorings and sweeteners.

Decaf coffee is a great option for people who are sensitive to caffeine, although it still contains small amounts of it. For a healthier cup overall, consider skipping sugary syrups and instead flavoring your coffee with natural spices like cinnamon, which add both taste and antioxidants.

In the end, coffee can be part of a healthy diet, if you choose the right type and tailor it to your body’s needs. “Filtered coffee is the best option for most people looking to protect their health,” said clinical dietitian Kelly Homsley in an interview with FOX News. “The filter traps harmful compounds that raise cholesterol, while still allowing the beneficial antioxidants to come through.”
