With the arrival of wintertime, it's soup season. Nutritionist Dr. Maya Rosman discussed on her show on FM 103 which soup is the best choice. She noted that now, "Soup becomes an integral part of our meals, sometimes even our snacks. As a satisfying, warming, and nourishing dish, there are significant differences between the different kinds of soups in terms of their nutritional benefits and calorie content."
So, which soups does she recommend? She begins with legume soup. "Legumes are an excellent substitute for meat, chicken, or fish as their nutritional value is very similar. The proteins found in legumes are considered to have high biological value, helping in muscle building. Moreover, they contain more iron than meat," she explained.
She then recommended vegetable soup: "Soup from vegetables like zucchini, carrots, and broccoli contains only around 50 calories on average, which allows you to consume it without worry. However, it should be noted that the soup is not a good source of vitamin C, as it breaks down during cooking."
She also made other recommendations: "Orange soup: The standout benefit of this soup is its high vitamin A content. Vitamin A, also known as beta-carotene, does not break down when heated, making orange soups an excellent source for this vitamin."
In conclusion, she explained that "Soup contributes to fullness for several reasons: it is rich in fluids and dietary fibers that fill the stomach. Furthermore, eating hot soup warms an area of the brain related to appetite, reducing it. I recommend eating soup as the first course, before other components of the meal, to help reduce calorie intake."
In her concluding remarks, Rosman emphasized that "All soups are healthy, but each has a different nutritional value. Vegetable soup is preferred during a diet, as eating it before a meal contributes to fullness and reduces calorie intake. Orange soup offers the highest content of vitamin A, which is important for the immune system. Legume soup can serve as a protein dish or a whole meal."
