If you're reading this article in bed, you might change your mind. A new study points to an unexpected health risk linked to smartphone use in bed as your phone may be carrying bacteria typically found in unhygienic environments. These microbes can lead to skin infections, pneumonia, and even severe risks like sepsis- especially for individuals with weakened immune systems.
Researchers explain that the bed provides ideal conditions for pathogen growth, due to its warmth and humidity. Every time your phone is in bed, it may transfer a large number of unwanted germs.
Experts also warn that keeping your smartphone close while sleeping- combined with the blue light it emits- can negatively affect sleep quality and overall health.
In a study conducted by MattressNextDay, samples were taken from 10 smartphones and 10 smartwatches. Lab results revealed that these devices were among the dirtiest tested. Notably, they contained Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterium known to cause serious infections.
Researchers recommend regularly disinfecting your device using alcohol wipes or UV sanitizers- and keeping your phone out of bed.
