There is an ongoing debate regarding the health of canned tuna due to claims about its mercury levels. According to Israeli nutritionist Dr. Maya Rosman, there’s no real reason to worry about eating tuna every day.

“The myth claims that tuna contains dangerous levels of mercury, but it’s important to note that there are six different types of tuna. The variety used in canned tuna is a smaller species, and the mercury risk is minimal,” explained Dr. Rosman. “A can of tuna contains around 25 grams of high-quality protein.”

She also recommends choosing tuna in water over tuna in oil, due to the difference in calorie content and fat quality: “Omega-3 is more bioavailable in tuna canned in water compared to tuna in oil. Plus, a can of tuna in water has only about 100 calories, while tuna in oil has nearly double.”

Regarding additives, Dr. Rosman says: “Canned tuna contains no preservatives, so there’s no issue in that regard either.”

Tuna is not only an excellent source of protein, but it’s also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals that support heart health, brain function, and a strong immune system.
