Dietary supplements are gaining popularity around the world, but new research warns that several commonly used supplements may carry serious health risks, especially concerning liver health.
A study conducted by the University of Michigan, in collaboration with multiple health institutions, found that supplements such as turmeric, green tea extract, ashwagandha, and garcinia cambogia may lead to liver injury and even hospitalization.
The study, published in JAMA Network Open, analyzed nearly 10,000 people in the U.S. between 2017 and 2021. Results showed that 4.7% of participants had used at least one of six specific supplements in the past month, including turmeric, green tea extract, garcinia cambogia, red yeast rice, and black cohosh.
According to lead researcher Dr. Alisa Lechichov of the University of Michigan, most users take these supplements on their own initiative, without medical supervision. The supplements are commonly used for various reasons: turmeric for inflammation, green tea for energy and alertness, garcinia cambogia for weight loss, and black cohosh for menopause symptoms.
A previous study from 2022 had already raised concerns, noting a rise in supplement-related hospitalizations, from 7% to 20% over the past decade. This sharp increase underscores the need for awareness and caution.
Despite the findings, the researchers do not recommend halting supplement use entirely, but urge consumers to be especially cautious about dosages and interactions with medications.
The study’s authors recommend:
Consulting with a healthcare professional before starting any supplement, especially if it’s for long-term use or being combined with prescription drugs.
Stronger regulatory oversight from authorities to ensure safer manufacturing and marketing practices for dietary supplements.
While supplements can offer real benefits in some situations, it’s crucial to understand the potential risks and remain alert, particularly when taking them regularly or alongside other medications.
