Videos online are buzzing about using garlic to prevent illness, but can it genuinely replace medical antibiotics? Here's what you need to know before jumping on the garlic bandwagon.

Recently, social media has been abuzz with a new trend: using garlic instead of antibiotics. Many regular users of garlic believe it to be "nature's antibiotic" and a viable alternative. But is this belief accurate?
According to Ayelet Biran, a clinical dietitian at Maccabi Healthcare Services, garlic does not treat infections or illnesses like antibiotics do. She shares with N12 that while garlic is indeed very healthy, it is no substitute for prescribed medication, and patients with an antibiotic prescription should take it to recover.
Garlic assists in balancing cholesterol levels, managing blood pressure, and reducing inflammatory activities. It may also aid in weight loss. It's recommended to consume garlic fresh rather than cooked.
Dr. Alex Rosenthal, a gastroenterology expert at Maccabi Healthcare Services in the southern region, highlighted in an article that although there are numerous studies on this topic, none scientifically prove garlic’s effect on bacteria in the same way antibiotics function. Excessive consumption of garlic can lead to side effects like bad breath, heartburn, gas, and bloating.
"Individuals taking blood thinners or other medications should consult with their doctor before starting regular garlic consumption, as it can impact the effectiveness of these medications," he advises. "It's crucial to consume garlic in moderation, and pregnant or nursing women should consult their doctors before consuming large amounts."
