#VALUE!

Over the years, beer has become the subject of ridicule in certain circles, often dismissed as a fattening, unhealthy drink that accelerates skin aging. However, having a glass of beer may actually be good for you.

Beer in Moderation May Offer Real Health Benefits

A recent study suggests that moderate beer consumption (emphasis on moderate) can actually benefit the body:

  • For men, moderate beer intake has been associated with a reduced risk of heart disease. It may help increase HDL ("good") cholesterol, which protects against arterial plaque buildup, thereby lowering the risk of heart attacks.

  • For postmenopausal women, who are at greater risk of bone density loss, beer may offer support. Beer contains a significant amount of bone-supporting minerals, which can help maintain skeletal strength.

A Bit of Beer History

Beer was first brewed in the Middle East, and legend has it that it was discovered by accident when grains were left in storage and naturally fermented into a pleasant-tasting drink.

Beers are generally divided into two main types: Lager and ale.

In some countries, such as the Netherlands, breweries also produce non-alcoholic beers, which are gaining popularity as healthier alternatives.

Over the years, many people have attempted to brew beer at home, but success is rare. Combining the necessary ingredients into a well-balanced drink is a more complex science than it appears.

The Other Side: The Cancer Risk

On the flip side, beer (and alcohol in general) isn't without its serious health risks.

A 2018 study in the UK found that alcohol consumption accounts for about 3% of all cancer cases — approximately 12,000 cases per year. According to this and other studies published by Cancer Research UK, even moderate alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing certain cancers.

These include:

  • Esophageal cancer

  • Mouth and throat cancers

  • Breast cancer

  • Colon and rectal cancer

  • Liver cancer

Researchers concluded that complete avoidance of alcohol could significantly reduce the risk of developing these seven types of cancer, even in those who aren’t heavy drinkers.

A glass of beer once in a while may offer some health perks — especially for the heart and bones, when consumed in moderation.
It's important to weigh those potential benefits against the well-documented risks, particularly the link between alcohol and certain cancers. As with most things in life, balance, awareness, and moderation are key.
