As winter approaches with rainy days ahead, there's a natural remedy you should consider adding to your routine: ginger. Known for its warming qualities, ginger can help boost blood circulation, fight bacteria, and ward off infections. Many people find it particularly effective in the cold season, often adding it to their cup of tea.

Recent research highlights that fresh ginger root can inhibit the development of the RSV virus, which causes lower respiratory tract infections and is responsible for bronchitis and pneumonia. It should be noted that only fresh ginger root is effective, while dried ginger is less beneficial for colds.

Shir Alfi, a senior dietitian at Clalit in the Dan region, wrote on the N12 site: "If you're experiencing bloating, abdominal discomfort, or constipation, ginger can aid you. Its active compounds help speed up gastric emptying, reducing bloating and gas through an enzyme called zingibain, which helps break down proteins."

She continues, "Studies comparing ginger to anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) found similar effects. Thanks to the anti-inflammatory compounds in ginger, known as gingerols, it can aid rheumatic conditions like rheumatoid arthritis by reducing pain, inflammation, and improving mobility."

Ginger may also help with nausea. "Whether on a car trip, diving at sea, or during pregnancy, ginger can effectively combat nausea. Certain compounds like shogaol and gingerol speed up gastric emptying and block serotonin from binding to specific receptors in the brain. You can enjoy ginger tea or grate fresh ginger root yourself. However, avoid taking capsules without consulting a doctor or nutritionist."

Alfi notes that ginger is rich in vitamins and minerals. "Adding ginger to your tea or dishes provides a wealth of nutrients like potassium, magnesium, vitamin C, iron, folate, and zinc."

Another benefit is heart protection. "High blood sugar, blood pressure, and fats increase heart disease risk. Studies show that people who regularly consume ginger have a lower risk of hypertension and heart disease. A 2018 review of 10 studies on type 2 diabetes patients found that 1 to 3 grams of ginger daily for six to 12 weeks significantly improved blood lipid profiles and reduced sugar levels."

Finally, ginger aids weight loss. A study found that it significantly reduced body weight and waist-to-hip ratios in overweight and obese individuals.
