Unlocking the Secret to a Longer Life: How Hobbies Can Be the Key to Health and Happiness

While often thought of as children's activities, hobbies hold incredible benefits for adults too. Research shows hobbies can reduce stress, improve health, and even add years to your life. Discover the joys of adult hobbies!

#VALUE!

When we were kids, almost every child we knew had a hobby. Whether it was drawing, playing music, collecting sticker books (yes, that was a thing), or gathering marbles, hobbies were plentiful. But as adults, have we outgrown our hobbies? Do we know how to pause and engage in something purely for enjoyment? Can we give ourselves the gift of creation, reading, or other forms of joyful activity? If you found yourself answering 'no' to these questions, recent studies might just inspire you to pick up a hobby or two.

Research conducted at two American universities examined thousands of adults across various age groups. A 2017 study at the University of Texas involved over 1,500 adults reporting their hobbies and leisure activities. The surprising results? Individuals who actively engaged in hobbies like reading, playing music, gardening, or volunteering had a lower risk of dying from heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Additionally, their lifespans extended by an average of 7.5 years compared to those without hobbies.

Another study, conducted at the University of Chicago in 2015, found that people with social hobbies, like joining sports teams or clubs, lived an average of 5 years longer than those without such hobbies. This study included data from more than 3,000 adults and revealed that those who participated in social activities had a lower mortality risk.

How Does This Work?

Naturally, the question arises: how do hobbies really impact longevity? Engaging in hobbies offers a break from the pressures of daily life, providing an escape from worries through enjoyable and fulfilling activities. Moreover, hobbies that involve physical activity directly contribute to strengthening bones and muscles, maintaining a healthy weight, and promoting cardiovascular health.

What about participating in group activities like classes, workshops, or sports teams? Besides the fun aspect, these activities facilitate meeting people with shared interests, learning new things together, and boosting self-confidence. Ultimately, all types of hobbies deliver a priceless sense of satisfaction and fulfillment.

Finding Your Hobby

Interested in adopting a hobby but not sure which one? Think back to what you enjoyed as a child. What did you love doing? What brought you joy? If something still excites you today, dedicate a little time to it each day. Unsure where to start? Experiment with different creative pursuits until you find one that brings you happiness and satisfaction. Always wanted to play guitar? Maybe now is the perfect time at 45. Love painting? It's never too late to start at 30. Give it a try, and you might succeed.

And What About Serving Hashem?

Like everything in the world, engaging in a hobby can be a tool in serving Hashem. Someone who brings joy to their soul through music may feel a connection and devotion to Hashem through their song. This is equally true for art, spending time in nature, or any other soul-healing activity.
