When you're at the supermarket, chances are you check the expiration date on the milk. When buying canned goods, you probably do the same. When was the last time, if ever, that you checked the expiration date on your pillow?
You may not have noticed, but your pillow has an expiration date printed on it. A pillow's expiration date is more important than you think, and replacing your old pillows with new ones can significantly improve your sleep quality.
Studies show that a fresh, non-expired pillow offers better support for your spine and neck, improves posture and comfort, and is also crucial for hygiene reasons. Sleeping on an old pillow, increases the risk of skin rashes, allergic reactions, and mold growth over time.
Experts from the National Sleep Foundation recommend replacing pillows every two years to ensure they provide proper support and remain clean.
How do you know when your pillow has expired without checking the tag? Look for signs like neck pain, a pillow that no longer feels firm, or one that doesn't fold like it used to. As a quick test, try folding the pillow in half and hold it for a minute. If it doesn’t spring back to its original shape when released, it's probably time for a new one.
