In recent years, microwave popcorn has become a popular trend. Instead of the traditional method of popping corn kernels in a pot with oil, many now opt for the faster microwave method.
However, a study published in the medical magazine VeryWell Health found a link between microwave popcorn bags and cancer, along with other health concerns. The article explains that "the potential connection between microwave popcorn and cancer stems from the chemicals found in popcorn bags, particularly PFAS — grease-resistant substances that prevent oil from seeping through the packaging. The problem is that PFAS break down into a chemical called PFOA, which is suspected to be carcinogenic."
When these harmful chemicals are present in high amounts, they can lead to a condition known as "popcorn lung" — a disease that narrows airways and causes coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. According to U.S. health organizations, this harmful chemical is no longer used in popcorn bags manufactured in the country.
Dr. Marina Tamir Tsadkin, a clinical pharmacologist and infection expert at Ramat Gan Academic College, explains: “Heating the bag releases numerous toxins that can lead to illnesses such as cancer, chronic diseases, and respiratory conditions. To enjoy popcorn safely, prepare it at home using the classic method, with plain corn kernels and a pot. If you still prefer the convenience of pre-packaged popcorn, make sure the label clearly states that the bag is PFAS-free.”
